Libraries For Life

If you could save a life, would you?  Most people would say “Yes!” without hesitation.  One of the simplest ways to save and improve lives is by supporting organ, tissue, and eye donation.

Since 2010, libraries across Michigan have participated in a simple and effective campaign to educate patrons about donation and transplantation, and to give them an opportunity to join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry. The campaign is called Michigan Libraries for Life. This statewide campaign, which includes public, academic, special and hospital libraries of all sizes, has inspired nearly 2,900 people to sign up as donors!

“Libraries have been great partners in saving and healing lives,” said Rick Hillbom, Gift of Life Michigan’s Interim CEO. “They’ve been very successful at educating the public about the facts of organ, tissue and eye donation. Thanks to this partnership, Michigan Libraries for Life gives hope to the 3,500 Michigan patients waiting for a life-saving organ transplant.”

More than 95% of Americans support organ, tissue and eye donation. Yet in Michigan, only 54% of adults have joined the state’s donor registry. That discrepancy is largely due to residents not knowing how to properly join the donor registry.  Michigan Libraries for Life helps to address that information need.

This fall, from Monday, October 3, through Sunday, October 9, Waterford Township Public library will be hosting a Libraries for Life table to encourage library users to learn about being a donor.

Have an hour or two to help educate anyone who expresses an interest? If yes, please contact Kim Wilcox at 248-618-7685 or kwilcox@waterfordmi.gov.

History of Hudson's Department Store

The world’s largest American flag, Freedom Festival fireworks, magical animated windows, a nine-story tree of lights, twelfth floor auditorium spectaculars, the home of the real Santa, Maurice salad, and throngs of shoppers! These are just a fraction of the memories that will come alive during Michael Hauser’s presentation.  Attendees will be treated to memorabilia including signage and hundreds of photos, and video clips of Detroit’s homegrown retailer that once towered over Woodward Avenue. There will also be time for attendees to share memories and ask questions.

October is Family History Month

WATERFORD GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY’S CELEBRATES “OCTOBER IS FAMILY HISTORY MONTH”

The Waterford Genealogical Society will be hosting a special two-part program at the library to celebrate family history month.  The guest speaker is Daniel Earl. He has over 25 years of researching his family & helping others make history part of their story.

10:30am  -- In “timelines: back to the future of your research,"  he will explain how to use gathered documents into context that helps create a story of the family.

12:30pm  -- In “funeral homes & family history, they are dying to meet you," he will show how funeral home records can provide genealogical rich info. He will focus on records typically found in funeral homes, how to locate resources on-line and in the field.

Both of these programs are free and open to the public.  Lite refreshments will be provided. To register call the adult desk of the library at 248-618-7694.
