Waterford Insider April 2025

Reminder: Place yard waste in brown yard waste bags or in plastic 32-gallon containers clearly marked “Yard Waste” facing the street. No tree stumps or trunks are accepted. No compost will be accepted in plastic bags.

PRIORITY WASTE - INVOICES

Following a one-year extension to Waterford's contract for curbside residential waste removal services provided by Priority Waste, the company mailed invoices out through USPS on March 26th and 27th for the service period March 17 to June 30, 2025.

Those invoices included three documents:

  1. The invoice for the current service period
  2. The statement showing total amount due including any past due balances or credits
  3. A Letter that covers rates, discounts, and some information that we asked them to relay to customers when we signed the agreement to extend the contract one year

Unfortunately, the invoices show an invoice date of March 3rd, and a due date of March 31st, which is incorrect.

The invoices were completed and printed on March 3rd, but were not able to be delivered until the accompanying letter was finalized. Because of this, Priority Waste has extend a few key deadlines. For invoices that cover the service period of March 17-June 30, 2025:
The deadline to receive the annual pre-pay discount is April 30th.
Late fees will not be applied to the current invoice until May 16th

Residents may use their account number to log on to Priority Waste's website to review invoices and statements and to make payments at www.prioritywaste.com

News from the waterford dpw

Cross-Connection and Backflow Prevention
Waterford Township DPW has contracted HydroCorp to manage the township Cross-Connection Control program. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), formerly Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), requires DPW to have all commercial and residential accounts inspected for proper backflow prevention to maintain the safety of our water supply.

HydroCorp inspectors will inspect residential properties every ten years and commercial properties either yearly or every five years depending on the property’s use and plumbing fixtures. These inspections are included in the contract between DPW and HydroCorp so there is no cost to homeowners.

In addition to the visual inspections done by HydroCorp, any property with a testable backflow prevention device will receive a testing notice to verify the backflow prevention device is functioning properly. Testing of backflow prevention devices is required annually for commercial properties and every three years for residential properties. Testing of backflow prevention devices need to be performed by a certified backflow prevention tester, a list of certified testers can be found at www.watercustomer.com. Cost for these tests are the responsibility of the property owner.

Questions regarding the Cross-Connection Control program or backflow prevention assemblies and testing can be directed to HydroCorp at 800-690-6651 or 248-250-5000.

Spring Hydrant Flushing
Waterford Township DPW will be flushing fire hydrants throughout the month; at this time DPW is not servicing all fire hydrants. Fire hydrant flushing is important to ensure water quality. Staff will be performing this work in the evenings after normal business hours over the next few weeks.

The hydrant flushing process will stir up mineral sediment in the water mains which can cause your water to appear brown, if this occurs run cold water in your bathtub or laundry tub to clear any sediment that has been stirred up. If you notice or hear of crews in your area performing this work, DPW recommends you avoid doing laundry until the crew is finished and you have verified that your water is running clear to prevent staining and/or hindering the performance of your washing machine.

Attention all Lawn, Landscape and Garden Enthusiasts
As you start planning your spring landscape and gardening projects, consider having a second water meter installed. This second meter is used to register the outdoor water use for your property; measuring the outdoor water use separately allows DPW to not bill sewer portion for water that is not entering the sewer system. The sewer cost is the largest portion of your quarterly bill and having a second meter installed could provide significant cost savings depending on your outdoor water habits.

Current cost for a 5/8” sprinkler meter is $256 and quarterly charges are $14.87 for the first 1,000 cubic feet of use and $3.32/100 cubic feet over 1,000. Questions about past water use, purchasing a sprinkler meter or to schedule an appointment please call 248-674-2278.
