Oakland Community College Feasibility Study underway
A portion of the Oakland Community College (OCC) Highland Lakes Campus is currently being explored by Waterford Township to assess the feasibility of a community center. This location is being considered because of its existing recreational amenities and greenspace connectivity to Hess-Hathaway Park. The Township has entered into an agreement with Plante Moran Realpoint to perform a feasibility study that reviews the southern area of the campus property and its buildings. The results of this study are expected to be complete by Spring of 2024. After the completion of this study, the Board of Trustees will weigh the possibilities of pursuing a purchase with the intent of retrofitting several buildings to potentially function as the Township's new community center. As always, the Township is committed to providing substantial recreation amenities to all who chose Waterford as their premier destination to live, work, and play. Visit the Projects section of Waterford Township's website for a map and any future updates

DRAFT MASTER PLAN AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW AND COMMENT
Waterford Township in conjunction with community planning and design firm Houseal Lavigne, has drafted a new 20-year Master Plan. A Master Plan serves as the official long-term policy guide for the land use, improvement, development, redevelopment, and preservation within a Township. It functions as a roadmap for the Township to direct future growth and development over the next 20 years. Prior to this plan, the Township’s most recent Master Plan was adopted in 2003 and has reached the end of its 20-year functionality. The Master Plan contains policies, goals, and objectives that ensure the collective needs and desires of the community guide the Township’s future development and improvement through appropriate zoning and regulations. The process of drafting a plan has been accomplished through the cooperation and dedicated effort of residents, Township staff, public officials, partner agencies, developers, property owners, and the local business community. Once adopted, this Plan’s goals, recommendations, and actions will be consulted regularly by Township staff, boards, and commissions while reviewing all proposals for new development and planning-related initiatives. This includes directing agencies and service providers to use the Plan as new facilities, infrastructure, environmental initiatives, and programming are considered for investment. Click HERE to review the Draft Master Plan! Feedback on this Plan from the community is requested. Comments or questions can be emailed to Jeff Polkowski, Director of Development Services. Please title your email with “Master Plan Review – Your Name” to ensure it is received. Due to anticipated high volumes of interest, responses to questions could be delayed. We anticipate responding to questions within three to five business days. With thoughtful implementation and unwavering commitment, this Master Plan will lay the groundwork for a bright future for Waterford Township, ensuring its continued prosperity and vibrancy over the coming decades. This Master Plan charts a course toward a sustainable, equitable, and resilient Waterford Township – a community that embraces innovation while honoring its unique character.

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS (dpw) project announcement
Starting April 1, 2024, residents, businesses, and visitors will begin to see trucks from Wachs Water Services (photo below) throughout the Township completing the DPW Valve Assessment and Exercising Program. The Wachs Water Services crews will be assessing and exercising approximately 3,800 valves in the water distribution system. If required, crews will complete minor repairs on a number of the valves. The valves are located in green belts, easements, and along roadways, usually in wells with manhole covers. The crews may have to close traffic lanes for short periods of time for their safety and the safety of motorists. Patience and understanding would be appreciated. The project is expected to take four to five months and will start in Section 1 of the Township and continue through each section sequentially. If you have questions or concerns, contact the DPW at (248) 674-2278.

Attention all Lawn, Landscape and Garden Enthusiasts As you start planning your spring landscape and gardening projects, consider having a second water meter installed. This second meter is used to register the outdoor water use for your property; measuring the outdoor water use separately allows DPW to not bill sewer portion for water that is not entering the sewer system. The sewer cost is the largest portion of your quarterly bill and having a second meter installed could provide significant cost savings depending on your outdoor water habits.
Current cost for a 5/8” sprinkler meter is $245 and quarterly charges are $14.87 for the first 1,000 cubic feet of use and $3.32/100 cubic feet over 1,000. Questions about past water use, purchasing a sprinkler meter or to schedule an appointment please call 248-674-2278.
