WATERFORD REGIONAL FIRE dept.
SAYS PRACTICE SAFE COOKING
THIS THANKSGIVING!

Thanksgiving Fire Safe Cooking Tips

Turkey Fryers:
NFPA continues to believe that turkey fryers that use cooking oil, as currently designed, are not suitable for safe use by even a well-informed and careful consumer. These types of turkey fryers use a substantial quantity of cooking oil at high temperatures. Units currently available for home use pose a significant danger that hot oil will be released at some point during the cooking process. In addition, the burners that heat the oil can ignite spilled oil. The use of turkey fryers by consumers can lead to devastating burns, other injuries, and the destruction of property. NFPA urges those who prefer fried turkey to purchase from a professional establishment, such as grocery stores, specialty food retailers, and restaurants.

Consider a new type of turkey fryer that has been listed by a qualified testing laboratory, including infrared fryers, air fryers, and electric turkey fryers. Do not leave fryers unattended when in use.

 Holiday Cooking:

1. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, boiling, grilling, or broiling food.

2. Keep things that can catch fire away from the stove.

3. Never cook when you are tired.

4. Keep kids and pets at least 3 feet away from the stove area.

5. To put out a pan fire, slide a lid over the pan. Turn off the stove and let the pan cool. Do not move the pan.

6. If you have a fire in your oven, turn off the heat. Keep the door closed until it is cool.

7. If you have a fire that does not go out, get outside the home right away. Call 9-1-1 from outside.

What to Do If You Have a Cooking Fire:

Always keep a lid nearby when you are cooking. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by sliding the lid over the pan. Turn off the burner. Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, leave the lid on until the pan has cooled.  Never pour water on a cooking pan grease fire. Only trained adults should use a fire extinguisher on a grease fire. Only Class K fire extinguishers are rated for the purpose of putting out grease and animal fat fires. In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed until it is cool. Only open the door once you are confident the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you open the oven door.  After a fire, the oven should be checked by a licensed professional and/or serviced before being used again.  When in doubt, just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to help contain the fire. After you leave, call 9-1-1 or the fire department from a mobile phone or a trusted neighbor’s phone.

Attention all “Snowbirds”!  Don't forget to do a few important items before you leave town for your seasonal home away from Waterford.

Assessing: Please contact the Waterford Assessing Department with your forwarding address if you are leaving town for the Winter.  Even though you may have your mail forwarded by the U.S. Post Office, property tax bills and assessments notices are not forwarded and are returned to the Township.  Please call 248-674-6270 to let us know your Winter address.  In the alternative, you may submit an Address Change online at the following link:  https://www.waterfordmi.gov/FormCenter/Assessing-15/Address-Change-Form-75

Department of Public Works: Please contact Waterford DPW at 248-674-2278 to schedule to have water turned off to your home before you leave for the winter. Appointments for turn off are scheduled for an exact date and time for a technician to come out.

Turning the water off at the road is a safeguard against frozen pipes and will save you money as billing is suspended while the water is off. A $30 turn-off charge is assessed and a $30 turn-on charge will be assessed when water is turned back on in the spring.

GFL Curbside Collection: Waterford's designated residential curbside waste hauler program with GFL Environmental includes an option for residents to suspend service for one consecutive period each 12-month period for up to three consecutive months for an invoice credit.
