TeenTober

We’re celebrating Teens and libraries this month! Sign up for the TeenTober Challenge on Beanstack and earn badges as you complete a variety of activities throughout the month of October. If you complete 5 or more of the activities, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a prize package of all kinds of fun stuff. Children’s Programs (through age 12)
Autumn Leaf Painting
Saturday, October 1, 10:30a – 11:30a, Storytime/Craft Room.
Recommended ages 5-12. No registration required.
Come and try your hand at leaf painting. Paint around leaves to create a colorful collage of autumn.
Saturday Storytime: Fly Guy!
Saturday, October 15, 10:30a – 11:15p, Storytime/Craft Room.
Recommended ages 3 – 8. No registration required.
Enjoy some of Tedd Arnold's great stories about Fly Guy and make a Fly Guy project.
Lego Club
Saturday, October 22, 10:30a-11:00a OR 11:30a-12:15p. Storytime/Craft Room.
Recommended ages 5 and up. No registration required.
Students meet to create their own Lego structure. We have two class times in the morning. Please come to one of these sessions: 10:15-11:00 am OR 11:30 am-12:15 pm.
Halloween Happening
Saturday, October 29, 2:00p-4:30p. Storytime/Craft Room.
Recommended ages 3 and up. No registration required, just stop by during the event’s hours.
Activity tables will be set up for make-and-take creepy crafts. Photo ops with Frank N. Stein. Scary scavenger hunt, spooky stories, and a treat bag to take home. Costumes are welcome, but not required.
Weekly Storytimes begin the week of October 17
Drop-in storytimes from October 17 through November 14. Storytimes are 30 minutes long and include a variety of stories, songs, fingerplays, and other activities. Choose the age-appropriate session from those listed below. No registration required.
NOTE: Children must be accompanied by a parent or a caregiver.
Babytime Storytime

Recommended ages 6 months to 15 months
Toddlertime Storytime

Teen Take and Make Kits
Kids in 6th through 12th grades can pick up a Take & Make Kit during the following weeks. Instructions and most supplies will be included in the kit. All you have to do is pick up the kit and then you can make this craft in the comfort of your own home and at your own pace. Supplies are limited, so these kits are reserved for kids in 6th through 12th grades only. One kit per person. No registration required.

Death & Lighthouses on the Great Lakes – via Zoom
Thursday, October 6, 6:3p0-8:00p, Registration required.
Back in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, losing one's life while tending to a Great Lakes lighthouse wasn't an unusual occurrence. Join Dianna Stampfler, author of Death & Lighthouses on the Great Lakes: A History of Murder and Misfortune, for a mix of true crime details, media coverage, and historical research which brings the stories to life . . . despite the deaths of those featured. Registration including email required in order to receive a link to the Zoom meeting on the day of the program.
Poetry and Prose Open Mic

Do you have poetry or prose you want to share with the public? A slam you love to perform? An essay which needs to be heard? Do you enjoy listening to fine writing, experiencing art performance? If so, then come join local writers as they read their works and share the joy and artistry of the written word. Presented by the Waterford Writers Workshop group.
Movie Matinee Series screening: The Ghost & Mr. Chicken

Starring: Don Knotts and Joan Staley. A spooky comedy about a small-town, weak-kneed typesetter who wants nothing more than to become a serious reporter. Following a fright-filled evening in an alleged haunted house, where twenty years earlier a famous murder/suicide occurred, he may get his chance. (Comedy) 90 minutes. Rated G. Popcorn provided. Jigsaw Puzzle Race
Saturday, October 29, 10:30a-1:30p. Community Room. Registration required.
Teams will compete to be the fastest at assembling a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle! Think you can lead your team to victory? Register as a team of 2-4 people. A prize will be awarded to the quickest team. Teams have three hours to complete their puzzle. Puzzle-building begins promptly at 10:30 a.m.

Covering entering data, basic formatting and copy/paste. This is for people with basic computer knowledge.
Introduction to Microsoft Excel 2016
Saturday, October 8, 10:00a-11:15a, Conference Room. Registration required.
We’ll start with an overview of Excel, and go over how to enter and edit data in cells, formatting cells, and basic formulas such as addition and subtraction. Basic computer knowledge and familiarity with Microsoft Word and/or other Microsoft Office application(s) are prerequisites.

Saturday, October 15, 30-minute timeslots beginning at 10:30a. Group Study Room. Registration required.
Computer/technology help. One-on-one assistance with your own device or computer (bring it in with you). Our computer systems administrator will do his best to troubleshoot your problem, answer your questions, or advise you on what to do. Register through the Library’s Calendar of Events.

Adults – Enrichment Groups
Waterford Writers Workshop
Tuesday, October 4 & October 18, 6:30p – 8:30p, Conference Room. Ages 16 or older.
Published and unpublished writers are invited to join a community of writers to provide constructive and supportive critiques of each other’s works and to further discuss the craft of writing. Each writer will have the opportunity to read their work to the group. Bring at least five copies of their work (limit of 5 typewritten, double-spaced pages of fiction/non-fiction, poetry/prose, screen plays, etc.) for peer review and discussion. All copies will be returned to the writer with edits, constructive critiques, and suggestions by fellow group members.
Knitting Group

Waterford Genealogical Society (WGS)
Afternoon meeting: Wednesday, October 5, 1:00p - 3:00p, Community Room.
Genealogy is the study of family ancestries and histories. The Waterford Genealogical Society (WGS) meets on the 1st Wednesday afternoon of the month in the Library’s Community Room. All are welcome to attend.
WGS Evening meeting: Tuesday, October 11, 7:00p – 8:30p via Zoom
WGS also meets virtually on the 2nd Tuesday evening of the month. If you wish to attend you must register through our Calendar of Events and enter your email address so we can send you the zoom link. Please register before 5:00p of the day of the meeting. Host: Julia Hanneman-Schoenbach.

Under the direction of Janet Macunovich, master gardener we will be preparing beds for winter by weeding, cutting back, moving some plants, fertilizing & mulching. Both novice and experienced gardeners welcome.
