Jury Duty
I consider trial by jury as the only anchor yet imagined by man by which a government can be held to the principles of its constitution.
- Thomas Jefferson
The jury system stands as a pillar of the American justice tradition—a testament to our shared commitment to fairness, truth, and civic duty. As a juror, you hold a vital role in this noble endeavor, and we invite you to take pride in your contribution.
While jury service carries great responsibility, it also offers a unique opportunity to engage meaningfully in the democratic process. We recognize that attending court may require adjustments to your daily life and may bring challenges at home or work. Still, the judges and staff of the 51st District Court deeply appreciate your service. We are committed to honoring your time, easing any inconvenience, and ensuring your experience is both enlightening and rewarding.

Parking is available in front of the courthouse and in front of Town Hall, which is located next to the courthouse. Please view the Directions and Map (PDF) for general directions. If you need more specific directions, please contact the Court staff at 248-674-4655.
Conduct & Attire
Your movement throughout the building will be limited. We kindly ask that you follow their instructions and stay with the jury pool at all times.
These measures are in place for your safety and to prevent any unintentional contact with judges, defendants, attorneys, or other parties involved in the case. Please know that this is not intended to be disrespectful. By law, these individuals are not permitted to communicate with jurors outside of the courtroom while a case is ongoing.
We also ask that you dress appropriately for your time in the courthouse. Business or business casual attire is preferred. Please avoid wearing jeans, shorts, halter tops, or similar casual clothing.
Lastly, please be aware that children are not permitted during jury selection.
Requests to Be Excused from Jury Service
While the Court understands that jury service may be inconvenient for some, it is a civic duty that very few individuals are legally excused from. Many jurors face challenges related to work or childcare; however, these concerns alone do not typically meet the standard for excusal. Only in cases of extraordinary circumstances will the Court consider releasing a juror from service.
Submitting a Request
If you believe you have a valid reason to be excused, you may submit a written request for the Court’s consideration. To do so, please contact the Court at 248-674-4655 and ask to speak with the Jury Clerk or email the Court for further information regarding the excusal process and submission deadlines.
Be prepared to provide appropriate documentation—such as a doctor’s note, travel itinerary, or other supporting materials—to accompany your request.
Monetary Compensation
You will receive some monetary compensation for your time spent at the courthouse. The rates are established by state law and start at $16.60 (including mileage) per half day. If employed, you may want to check with your employer about your company’s jury service and compensation policies.
Inclement Weather
In the event of inclement weather, please call the Court’s Weather Emergency Hotline at 248-618-7480 for information regarding Court closings.
